The county capital is Heraklion or Chandakas or Megalo Kastro
as it is sometimes called. It is the city with the largest population
in Crete.
The heart of the island's economy, commerce and tourism beats here.
The city is built at a strategic point, in the centre of the northern
coast, and is the base for almost every excursion and tour. The
international airport is almost as busy as that of Athens. In recent
decades, the city has grown enormously; both in size and in population,
as the rich interior, the port with its new installations, the
international airport and the area's general prosperity constantly
attract new inhabitants. Departments of the University of Crete
and almost all the departments of the Technological Institute (TEI)
of Crete operate here. There is full fun coverage, as the
modern building of the District University fun of Heraklion
is located a few kilometres south-west of the city, and there
are also two hospitals inside the city.
There are daily shipping connections to Piraeus, with double routes
in the busiest months of the year. Heraklion is therefore the gateway
to Crete for most people. The image of Giouchtas, the mountain
20 km south of Heraklion, with its ridges resembling the face of
Zeus, is more than splendid, seen from the ship's deck as it approaches
the harbour.
However, when the ship stops in Heraklion, the concrete apartment
blocks and peremptory construction are somewhat disappointing,
reminding us of the city of Piraeus that we left the night before.
Nevertheless, we must not rest on this first picture. Heraldion
is a magical city, with many interesting spots for all visitors;
all we need is the right 'key' to open its doors.
