It you want to have a complete picture of the Cretan civilization
in post-Christian years, you must definitely visit the Historical
Museum of Crete. It is housed in a neoclassical building, the former
residence of the city's benefactor Andreas Kalokerinos, along the
promenade west of the port.
Here you will find very interesting collections of Byzantine sculptures,
icons of the Cretan School of Religious Art, coins, relics from
the Cretan revolutions, folk art samples, beautiful textiles, a
room dedicated to the great author Nikos Kazantzakis and Emmanuel
Tsouderos.
You will have the opportunity to admire "The landscape of
Mount Sina" by Domenikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco), which
is the painter's only work exhibited in Crete. If you are not particularly
fond of painting but prefer something more impressive, you will
life a three-dimensional model of the city in the 17th century,
4x4m in size, with special lighting, which makes it a truly beautiful
sight. The museum is open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and
on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is closed on Sundays and
national holidays. Address: 7, Lysimachou Kalokerinou St., tel.
