This extraordinary museum is definitely worth a visit. The exhibits
are presented in a very cohesive and coherent fashion, per ecosystem,
and are very realistic.
The Natural History Museum of Crete offers its visitors a unique
opportunity to get acquainted with the Cretan natural environment
and its peculiarities, in the ecologically and culturally diverse
region of the Eastern Mediterranean. Visitors are exposed to the
natural riches of Crete and mainland Greece in an area of around
800 ml, with realistic reproductions of habitats, collections of
various plants and animals and abundant photographic material.
The themes ofthe permanent exhibition set up by the Museum include:
forests, wood and vegetation, wetlands, caves, rocky and sandy
coasts, mountains, as well as special exhibitions dedicated to
endangered animals (marine mammals, birds, etc.).
In addition, in the rooms dedicated to fossils, minerals and ores,
you can become acquainted with the impressive geological past of
Crete and the Mediterranean, and its future development. On the
same floor, a unique exhibition dedicated to the Minoan environment,
with reproductions of a Minoan farmhouse (life-size reproduction)
and the everyday chores of the Minoans, introduces visitors to
the difficult subject of the relations sport ween ancient civilizations
and the natural environment (paleo-ecology). The evolution of Man
also holds a special place on the building's second floor. The
progress of the human race from the early stages of Primates to
the creation of civilizations is depicted through casts of authentic
paleo-anthropological material, photographs and maps. Finally,
the botanical garden with endemic plants from Crete and the Mediterranean,
the projection room, and the cafe on the museum's ground floor
allow visitors to combine learning with entertainment and relaxation.
