| Koule, 25th Avgoustou Street and Agios (Saint) Titos church. You tour of the city starts at the port and the
imposing Koule fortress. Art and photography exhibitions are often
hosted on the ground floor, while concerts and theatrical performances
take place in the upper landing every year. Together with the
Liontaria (Lions), it is one of the most popular meeting places,
as it is one of the few prominent buildings in Heraklion and
can be seen from a great distance. The road leading to the lighthouse
is the so-called Bypass Avenue, named thus because it is used
by people with health problems for improving their physical state;
it is the only place where they can enjoy a walk next to the
sea without horns blaring and cars roaring past. The "Neoria" (shipyards)
used to be located at the current site of the customs building.
You can still see some shipyards next to the customs house and
along the promenade. |
