Koule, 25th Avgoustou Street and Agios (Saint) Titos church.

You tour of the city starts at the port and the imposing Koule fortress. Art and photography exhibitions are often hosted on the ground floor, while concerts and theatrical performances take place in the upper landing every year. Together with the Liontaria (Lions), it is one of the most popular meeting places, as it is one of the few prominent buildings in Heraklion and can be seen from a great distance. The road leading to the lighthouse is the so-called Bypass Avenue, named thus because it is used by people with health problems for improving their physical state; it is the only place where they can enjoy a walk next to the sea without horns blaring and cars roaring past. The "Neoria" (shipyards) used to be located at the current site of the customs building. You can still see some shipyards next to the customs house and along the promenade.
The renovated neoclassical buildings housing most of the banks and the offices of Minoan Lines give 25th Avgoustou Street a majestic look as you walk uphill. The magnificence of the buildings created the impression of a prosperous town, in contrast to the poor neighbourhoods in the centre, and thus it was also called Planis (Fallacy) Street.
The church of Saint Titos, the first bishop of Crete, which was rebuilt last century, is located almost half-way up the road. Dunng the Turkish domination of the island, it had been converted into a mosque, called Vezir Tzami. In 1856, a great earthquake destroyed it, but a new church was built over the ruins. The scull ofAgios Titos is also kept here.
There was an old ice-factory north of the church a few decades ago, and an ancient temple was found in its foundations. Today, you will find one of the most beautiful restaurant-cafes in Heraklion there. Right after the church comes the famous Loggia, the old nobleman's meeting place, which currently houses the Town Hall. According to the habits of the Venetians, each city had to have an official location where its noblemen could gather and discuss issues regarding the city. The building continues to serve a similar purpose, as the city council convenes on its first floor... The building has belonged to the Municipality since 1905, and received an award for its renovation by the international Europa Nostra organization in 1987.
