At the end of the pedestrian street, you will find Eleftherias
Square and the monument to the Unknown Soldier.
The locals had initially rejected its modern architecture, but
they have now accepted the advantages of its large unified space.
It used to be known as Tris Kamares (Three Arches - there used
to be three arched bndges over the water-duct to the Morosini fountain).
A little further up you will come to the Agios Georgios or Lazaretto
Gate, which is used for various exhibitions from time to time.
The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is
located in the centre of the city, at the northeastern end of Eleftherias
Square. The offices of the Hellenic Tourism Organisation are located
opposite the entrance to the Museum. Due to the influx of tourists,
there are several souvenir shops around the square. West of the
square, there is the Prefecture building, and the beginning of
Dikeosinis Street, with the Court and the security headquarters.
Behind the Court, is Daskalogianni Square (Daskalogiannis was the
leader of the 1770 revolution), and the central Post Office. You
will also find the offices of the Hellenic Mountaineering Organisation
here, which are open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
