As we descend, we return to Nikiforou Foka Square, the city's
main crossroads, called Meintani by the locals. Lion square is
to its south, and Kalokerinou Avenue is west, 182 1 street and
1866 street with the traditional openair market are north.
Here you will find a plethora of traditional products, and restaurants,
which, as is the case in most markets such as this, serve the famous "patsas" (tripe
soup) to revellers late at night. At the end of the market, you
will find Kornarou Square. The square is characterized by the statue
of funny okritos and Aretoussa, the main characters in Komaros' famous
life poem, made by the Heraklian sculptor Giannis Parmakellis.
The first fountain of Venetian Chandakas is preserved here.
The Bembo fountain, decorated with coats of arms, and a headless
statue from lerapetra decorates Koumbes, a circular building now
belonging to the Municipality, at what used to be the site of the
Church of Sotiras (the Saviour). Northeast of the square, Evans
Street, also a commercial street, leads us to the New Gate or Pili
tou lisou Jesus Gate).
