| Dia is the small island visible from every point in Heraklion.
It is 12 nautical miles northeast of the city, and has an area
of around 12 km'. There are three small rocky islets around Dia:
Glaronissia, Petalidi and Paximadi. It is said that in antiquity,
the island was green and had plenty of water, but the explosion
of the Santorini volcano put an end to any life form there. Wild
goats from the Samaria gorge were brought here in order to reproduce.
However, there was minimal vegetation on the island and the biotope
was significantly degraded, so the Forest Authority carried out
irrigation works and built areas for the protection of the wild
goats. Today it is a controlled hunting zone. |
