| Just before Marathos village, on the old highway to Rethymnon and 20 km west of Heraklion, you will come to a cafe bearing the unusual name "Doxa" (Glory). After you have a drink and taste the mouth watering "tiganitous me meli" (honey puffs), ask the proprietor to give you a torch and the keys to Doxa cave, which is located right underneath the cafe. Its entrance is at an altitude of 490 m, and it has a total length of 50m. Despite its small size, the stone formations of stalactites and stalagmites are impressive, and there is a natural platform in the centre with stalactite basins. |
