| The history of the town of Chersonissos begins in the 5th century BC. At the time, it was called Cherronissos and it is believed to have been established by Spartan colonists. The town's patron goddess was Vritomartis, one of the most important Minoan deities. Later, during the early Byzantine period, Chersonissos was an important religious centre and a bishop's seat from the early days of Christianity. Apostle Titus himself established the Chersonissos diocese. Today, the ruins of a large PaleoChristian basilica from the 6th century AD can be seen on the left side of the small harbour of Chersonissos, above the church of Agios Nikolaos. |
