| Just 5 km southwest of Heraklion, we come to the cradle of Minoan civilisation, Knossos, where the largest palace in Minoan Crete, still largely intact today, was located. The hill on which Knossos is built is known as Kefala. It was inhabited in the Neolithic period and extended to the west in the pre-palatial period. The first palace was destroyed in 1700 BC, and then rebuilt with new architectural plans. |
