| Kamares village is 57 km southwest of Heraklion, on the Heraklion
- Agia Varvara - Gergen - Kamares road, and has given its name
to the cave located north-east of the village at an altitude of
1,520 metres on the southern side of Psiloritis. The cave has a
characteristic type of pottery, called "Camareic", dating
from 2000 BC. A villager discovered it in 1890, and excavations
by British archaeologists ( 19 13) brought to light important Minoan
findings, and numerous beautiful colourful vessels from the middle
Minoan (paleo-palatial) period. Samples of these vessels found
in the Ilitheiia cave and in the Knossos and Phestos palaces, are
exhibited in
