| Mires is 53 km away from Heraklion, and together with Tymbaki, it is the financial and administrative heart of Messara. Both are prosperous towns, with all the comforts of modem life, but also all the problems deriving from it; noise, traffic, and a relatively hectic way of life. You will find hotels and restaurants to suit every budget. At the entrance to Mires, coming from Heraklion, next to the Agricultural Bank, you will find the excellent meat taverna of Giorgos Tsikritzis. Vegetarians should keep away from this place, however, as it is considered the Meat Temple of Mires! The specialty is pork steak with all the trappings, in huge portions. Tymbaki, of course, has the advantage of being by the sea, while Mires is 10 km away from the nearest beach. But when you have beaches like Matala, Kommo and Kali Limenes at hand, it is highly unlikely that you will choose to stay in town. |
