| The Museum was founded by the Messara Cultural Association in 1973.The exhibition opened in 1988 andwas awarded a special distinctionby the European Council in 1992.The museum's exhibits comefrom all over Crete.Its research centre has beeninvolved in various research activitiesin Crete since 1980, and it operatesas a co-ordination unit for the studyof the Cretan ecosystem (Man andthe environment), coveringthe period from 1000 BC to today.
