Heraklion County's southern coast is generally precipitous, and
access is difficult, as the Asteroussia Mountains descend to the
sea, leaving no room for valleys or bays. Access is made even more
difficult by the fact that there is no southern coastal road, as
this would require tremendous technical works.
Thus, the beaches of Tsoutsouros, Lentas and Kali Limenes are less
crowded than the northern ones, However, whatever we say here about
those beaches is too little; they have a unique magic atmosphere
that will make you want to come back repeatedly. It is no coincidence
that many holidaymakers head directly for this area after arriving
in Heraklion, and spend their entire vacation here.
The southern coast is waiting for you to explore it. A little care
is needed because of the sudden wind, which is sometimes so strong
that it will literally lift stones! If you happen to be on the
beach, you will have the unique experience of being... sandblasted,
while umbrellas, toys and hats are blown out to sea. The wind actually
gets stronger the deeper you go, and quite often boats and inflatable
rafts have been mobilised to save mischievous children in life-belts
that have drifted out to sea. Parents should remain alert when
the north wind is blowing on the southern coast.
