| Avdou is located at the 40th km of the road to Lassithi plateau. Avdou is the birthplace of captain loannis Dafotis, leader of the warriors who saved Archanes in 1897. The glory of Dafotis and the other warriors and captains from the village was such that it was named Kapetanochori (Captain Village). Midway to Lassithi plateau, Avdou is a pleasant place to stop and rest, with its stone houses, picturesque streets, gardens and courtyards full of flowers. In the village square, the large shady sycamore tree is the best place to enjoy a coffee or dnnk away from the hot summer sun. Inside the village, you will find the old churches of Evaggelismos, Agios Antonios and Agios Georgios with wall paintings from the 14th century, and Agios Konstantinos, I km southwest of the village, with semi-destroyed wall paintings by Manouil and loannis Fokas, from the year 1445. You will find places to stay and to eat inside the village and on the way (around I km) to the next village, Gonies.
