This is a small but beautiful
village, worth a detour on the way to Lassithi plateau. Krasi village
has been
mentioned from as early as 1280, and has very beautiful stone houses.
There are springs in the centre of the verdant village, and a huge
ancient sycamore tree, whose trunk is said to have the largest
circumference, 24 metres, of all the sycamore trees in Crete. You
can enjoy a coffee or drink in the shade of the trees. There are
also small tavernas open in the summer.
Remember that it gets quite cold here at night, due to the humidity
and the altitude. In the years sport ween the two World Wars, Nikos
Kazantzakis, Alexis Vamalis, Elli Alexiou, Galatia
Alexiou, Lefteris Alexiou, Vassos Daskalakis and other famous Greek
personalities used to spend their holidays in Krasi, the village
of the Alexiou family. Inspired by the literary presence in the
village, Malia Municipality established the "Krassanos Kyklos" cultural events, which take place every summer, and whose guests
include famous Greek intellectuals.
