| Arkalochori is 34 km from Heraklion on the road to Viannos and the county's southern regions. It is a busy town, with important economic and cultural activities. You will see the old church of Archangel Michael, probably from the 14th century, which has interesting wall paintings. In Profitis Ilias, near the village, there is a cave where in 1932, archaeologists Marinates and Platon discovered rich findings from the Minoan era, in a submerged chamber. They brought to light several hundred knives, swords, and copper double axes, some with wooden handles made of fir-wood or Lebanese cedar. |
