Ano (Upper) Viannos is 66 km away from Heraklion, and Kato (Lower)
Viannos a few kilometres less. The same asphalt road continues
towards lerapetra. To the right you will find crossroads leading
to the county's south-easternmost beaches, Arvi and Psari Forada.
The latter is a beautiful verdant village that literally hangs
off the southwestern slopes of Mount Dikti. It has huge sycamore
trees and a beautiful square where you can have a drink or a meal.
At the village entrance there is the impressive monument to the
village's 400 - not exist anymore - , which bears testimony to the role it played
during
the German occupation. The village consists of three neighbourhoods,
each with its own church.
One of Crete's most important literary personalities, loannis Kondylakis,
was born here; he wrote the legendary Patouchas poem. Patouchas's
refuge is believed to have been in Katharo plateau, at an altitude
of I 100 m, above the village. The name Viannos is the same as
that of the ancient city that existed in the area,
continuing a history of more than 4,000 years. Today, you can take
a walk in the same place where the Minoan city flourished, through
the village's beautiful narrow streets, and admire the view of
the Libyan Sea. You will find tavernas with delicious dishes, made
with the famous local olive oil. The Folk Art Museum is also worth
a visit.
