| Agios Nikolaos, the county capital, is a small town of about 8,000
inhabitants, and a wonderful combination of traditional and modem
life. It is atown built nearthe sea, around a lake, "Voulismeni
Limni" or Almyri or Vromolimni as the residents call it, which
is connected to the small port. Numerous outdoor restaurants, cafes
and bars around the lake attract the town's tourists. Its cosmopolitan
style has given it the nickname "Venice of the East".
The town is built on the ruins ofthe ancient city of Lato. Its
trademark lake is 64 metres deep, despite the locals' claim that
it is bottomless and connected to the Santonni volcano... According
to mythology, goddesses Artemis and Athena used to swim there,
while in medieval times it was called Mantraki, probably because
of the small church with that name built on its northern shore.
Today the town seems to be adapting to the modern demands of a
developing city, but has kept its picturesque style unspoilt. From
