Agios Nikolaos is a developing city, which is quite busy even
during the winter. Its pace is relatively slow, but it is quite
lively, with many things to do and see, antiquities and historical
monuments, as well as beautiful scenery. Europeans, including many
Greektourists who appreciate the town's liveliness on the one hand
and tranquillity on the other, mostly visit the town.
What you should definitely see during your tour of the town is
Lake Voulismeni, which is connected to the sea via a bndge-covered
channel. There are plenty of tavemas and cafes on the shores of
the lake,
which offer unique moments of relaxation and tranquillity with
a view of the lake's calm waters. You can then go for a walk over
the bridge, along the broad promenade towards Elounda, stopping
at the cafes, tavemas and souvenir shops, or in the opposite direction
towards the port and the harbour kiosk where you can have a meal
or coffee by the sea. The regional road starts here. You can follow
this road and reach the southeastern side of the town, where the
coach station is. An excellent idea for a relaxed walk, without
the bustle of traffic, is to follow the coastal pedestrian road
heading south, which eventually tums into a cobbled path. The town's
busiest spots are around the coach station and up to the central
square (El. Venizelou Sq.), and from there to the lake and port.
Finally, don't forget that the best view of the lake is from high
up, so before you turn around to return to the port, stop and enjoy
the panoramic view on the north side of the lake.
