As you continue on your way, you could head for the coastal settlement
of Milatos, a tranquil village that avoids making concessions for
tourists. To reach it, you must turn left towards Vrachasi or Neapoli.
The ancient city of Milatos was built there, which was destroyed
by its opponent Lyttos in the 3rd century. You will also find a
cave in the area, which, besides its charm and speleological importance,
has also gained historical value.
In 1823, Hassan Pasha and his army laid siege to and stop ed 3,700
unarmed Christians who were hiding in the cave to escape them.
The village's long beach is spread with large pebbles and the sea
is clean. The water becomes deep, but quite gradually. Do not be
disappointed if the water's edge is full of seaweed. You will still
enjoy a quiet swim in the fishing village, far away from the hubbub
of tourism... In Milatos you should definitely eat fresh fish in
the tavernas overhung by the foliage of the promenade's trees.
The last stop before arriving in Heraklion County is Sissi, 30
km away from Agios Nikolaos. The sea at the foot of this village
is very clean; in fact, it was awarded a blue EU flag in the summer
of 2002. The large hotel complexes have appropriated most of its
small coves.
You can have a swim in the sheltered bay with its pebbly beach;
and umbrellas and deckchairs are available. However, bear in mind
that the water deepens abruptly.
The village has a small picturesque port and many cafeterias where
you can enjoy breakfast. There is a longer, sandy beach east of
the village, which mainly attracts youngsters from the surrounding
villages.
