The next destination is the picturesque village of Agios Georgios,
just one kilometre away from Tzermiado, When amving in the village,
you have a sense of time standing still, as nothing in the surroundings
sport rays any trace of modem life.
Everything seems to have stopped somewhere in the 'SOs. The inhabitants
are dressed almost uniformly, with the women wearing aprons and
headscarves.
The men wear simple clothing from another era; their hands are
gnarled from the labours of a lifetime, and their wrinkled faces
will crease in the most wonderful smiles if you stop to talk to
them. Stop in a cafe in the village square, enjoy the shade of
trees and the view of the plain. Relax in the village's unique
sensation. Your tour of the village could include a visit to the
well-tended and noteworthy Folk Art Museum, which houses reproductions
of a traditional and a neo-classical home. The traditional home
includes a reception room, cellar, baking room, ham, stable, and
a room with traditional tools of trade.
The neo-classical home contains a gallery with works of art by
Cretan painters and wood-sculptors, an exhibition of Cretan textiles,
and military equipment from World War II.
The Eleftherios Venizelos Museum is also in Agios Georgios, housed
in an 1873 stone building near the Lassithi Plateau Folk Art Museum.
It contains photographic material and historical documents from
the life of EIeWerios Venizelos, The village is full of life during
the summer.
The 'xenitemeni' (locals who have left to live else
where) amve for the holidays, and the cultural events organised
during the summer create a festive atmosphere that will travel
you if you happen to attend any of them.
