Your tour will bring you to a modern city, which still preserves
the character of a coastal provincial town. It is one of the most
beautiful towns in Crete. Its amphitheatrical formation on the
hillside, with its well-planned streets and buildings, ends at
the picturesque port and the promenade built parallel to it, which
is ideal for romantic walks. Although the buildings are modem,
they have preserved the style of a picturesque town, and are tasteful
and blend harmoniously. The town is clean and cared for, and it
is obvious that its inhabitants life it. What you will definitely
remember from your visit to Sitia are the locals. They are the
most affable, hospitable and humorous Cretans you will ever meet.
They will always smile at foreigners visiting their town and are
willing to help, without a trace of the servility or self-interest
that usually comes with tourism.
Most of the visitors to Sitia are Greeks, looking for a quiet holiday
away from the bustle and expense of the island's larger tourist
resorts. There are many attractive shops in Sitia, decorated lovingly
by their owners. We suggest you have a drink in one of the cafes
on the promenade or a meal in one of the pretty and spotless tavernas
facing the port.
Afternoon walks on the promenade are wonderful, and if you are
feeling energetic, you can go as far as the pier or the lighthouse
to the north. If you visit the town during the Sultana festival,
you are guaranteed a great time, with a traditional Cretan celebration
until the early hours of the morning, and wine, raki and Sultanas
in abundance. You can also visit the fortress in the northeastern
section of the town, the Kazarma as the locals call it, a fortress
built in the 2nd Byzantine period, which took its final form during
the Venetian occupation.
For swimming, we recommend that you go 5 km east of the town, to
Agia Fotia. It is a clean sandy beach with numerous tavernas where
you can enjoy your meal, Local families mostly frequent it. Otherwise,
if you do not want to leave the town, you could go swimming at
Sitia beach, which has been awarded blue flags for many years,
meaning that the water is definitely clean. The long beach is a
mixture of sand and fine pebbles, and is equipped with umbrellas
and deckchairs. You can also indulge in water sports here, such
as jet skiing or water-skiing.
