Lassithi County does not lack archaeological findings and histoncal
monuments, as it has been inhabited constantly since Minoan times.
Many invaders have appeared there over the years, and they, too,
have marked the area's history.
According to Greek mythology, Zeus was
bom to Rea in Dikteon Andro cave on the Lassithi plateau. She then
gave him to the Nymphs and the Kountes to hide, in order to protect
him from the wrath of his father, Cronus, who wanted to stop him.
The first signs of life date from the Neolithic penod, while in
2700 BC tribes from Africa and Asia had invaded the area The creation
and prospering of the Minoan civilisation followed and lasted until
1700 BC.
The Donans then amved on the island, around 1450 BC. The ancient
cities of Lato, Olous, lerapytna and Pressos flourished at the
time. In 66 AD, the area was conquered by the Romans, and was annexed
to the Byzantine state in 393 AD. In 824 it was taken over by Arabs
and Saracens, followed by the penods of Venetian and Turkish rule.
The county's inhabitants contHbLfLed significantly to the nation's
fights for freedom against the Turks. The Cretan revolutionanes
of 1866 used Lassithi plateau as a hideout and headquarters. Again,
later on, the LassRhians bad spirit strated their fighting spirit in
resistance to the German occupation forces in the Second World
War, wrrting their own epic history, to which the War Memorials
of today bear testimony.
