Lassrthi holds second place in Greece forthe number of "blue
flags" (32) on its beaches, while Agios Nikolaos is the leading
Municipality, with 18 flags. This fact is a guarantee for visitors;
in this county, visitors will find organised and safe beaches,
with high service standards, and every kind of water sport. In
Sissi you will find a small sheltered cove, where the sea deepens
abruptly. Near Agios Nikolaos, only 5 km from the capital, there
is a sand-and-pebble beach, Chavania, which appears to attract
mostly families, as it is well organised.
A few kilometres away, you can visit the public beach of Elounda
The other beaches are inaccessible, as the large hotel complexes
have appropriated them. The pebbly beach of Plaka has clean waters
and a beautiful view of Spinalonga. In Istro there are three separate
beaches, each with its own style, III Ammos is a large beach where
you can enjoy a swim. On the southern coast outside lerapetra,
you will find the organised sand-and-pebble beach of Myrtos. Another
organised beach to the east of lerapetra is Koutsounari, with small
pebbles and waters that deepen gradually, while in Agia Fotia the
wonderful blue sea and pebbly sheltered beach will enchant you.
Please note, however, that the sea here is quite deep. In Makrygialos
you can choose which bay you prefer. The sea deepens gradually
and the beach is sandy with some small pebbles.
The beaches of Analipsi are also close by, for those who prefer
remote, empty beaches, In Sitia you will find the rocky beach of
Mochlos with its crystal water, but watch out for the August "meftemi" winds.
In the Vai palm forest, you can take a swim in an exotic setting,
while in quiet Kato Zakros you can enjoy moments of relaxation,
and further south, at the
Xerokampos beaches, you will find sandy, deserted beaches. Palekastro
and Hiona also have enchanting sandy bays.
