Falassarna

On your return from Gramvoussa peninsula, head for the south and west coasts in the direction of the famous Falassarna. To get to Falassarna, you will have to pass Platanos and from there turn north towards Kavoussi following the signposts. On the way to Falassarna, you will enjoy a magical view of the ruins of the ancient city, dense vegetation and the blue sea.
Ancient Falassarna was the coastal settlement of Polirrinia during antiquity, which protected the mighty city with its impregnable fort. As a port of call, it played an important role in commerce and shipping and this brought great wealth, which at some point helped Falassarna to develop more than Polirrinia.
Falassarna even had its own currency, which on one side portrayed the head of a woman and on the other the letters (I)A sport ween a trident.
The town was founded apparently in historic times although its name is pre-Hellenic On the town's archaeological site, you will see ruins of its walls that were undoubtedly very strong, judging from their size.
A stone throne - that was most probably dedicated to Poseidon or Diktina - has been preserved together with the ruins of the acropolis on the hill. Sculptured graves have also been discovered in the area, and relics from the temple of Apollo and Diktina.
While visiting the antiquities, you will notice, that, strangely the port of the ancient town is about 300 meters from the sea... This is due to tectonic phenomena occurring in Crete, as the soil rises from the sea level with the passage of time...

The modern version of Falassarna is a wonderful 3km (L) beach covered with white-gold sand. Only one part of it (the central one) is equipped with deck chairs and umbrellas while adjacent bays are suitable for a quieter swim.
You can choose sport ween a crowded or remote beach - where you can swim in the without clothes e - and follow the road either to the south of the archaeological site where you will find a large beach with blue-green waters or to the north behind the hill on which the acropolis stands or right in front of the ancient town where there is a bay and a pebbly beach. On this beach you can indulge, like everybody else, in limpet fishing. As an alternative, you can choose the impressive red coloured beach of Pahia Ammos in the south.
This small bay with emerald coloured waters has not been exploited for tourism and is therefore very peaceful with beautiful landscapes. Falassarna is suitable for a holiday and you will find all types of accommodation at reasonable prices.
