In August, the municipality organizes various cultural events
in the town of Chania. These events include plays, art exhibitions,
and concerts with famous artists, traditional music nights and
dance groups. Moreover, the "Venizelia" games are held
annually. The Battle of Crete is celebrated in Chania on 20-23
May.
The Battle of Crete is also celebrated on the same dates in Galatas,
Kandanos and Maleme. A wine festival is organized in Kastelli-Kisamos
every year by the local wine producers. In the evening, wine tasting
is accompanied by the sound of the local music instruments, "lira" and
the lute, and lively dances.
Wine flows plentifully and one can savour delicious meze (delicacies).
The "Gramvoussia", events commemorating the seizure of
Gramvoussa by the Cretans are also organised in Kastelli. In Chora
Sfakion, on the last Sunday in May, Panagia ( natural Mary) Thimiani
is celebrated in the
monastery that once harboured the assemblies of the free inhabitants
of Sfakia during the Turkish occupation. In Paleochora, you can
enjoy "Musical August" that is organized during the first
fortnight of the month. The festival of Profitis Ilias takes place
in a festive way in Sougia on July 20th.
Then, a large festival takes place at Akrotiri to celebrate the
Assumption at the monastery of Agia Triada Tzangarolon. The feast
day of the natural Mary, August I 5th, is celebrated at the Monastery
of Chrisoskalitissa and in Kolymbari at the Monastery Kira-Gonia.
Finally, in Vamos and the neighbouring villages of Kefalas and
Gavalochori, concerts are organized with famous artists and traditional
music minstrels while the events are accompanied by art and handicraft
exhibitions.
