| A few kilometres to the south (4), you will come across a small, traditional and picturesque village, Hromomonastiri. About 500 m before the village you'll see a sign saying Agios Eftychios. Follow it and you will come to perhaps the oldest church in Crete, with amazing Byzantine murals dating from the11th century. Continue towards the village, and you will reach a picturesque village square, where you can rest a while and have a drink. Walk around the village to admire the Venetian buildings that have been preserved, with the Clontio family mansion dominant among them. The country chapel of Panagia Kera (Our lady) is about 600 m outside the village, and worth a visit, for religious purposes or to admire its Byzantine architecture and murals, in verdant surroundings that bring peace to the heart and mind. |
