| Taking the road to Zouridi village, where you will also find the
Roman tombs, head for Roustika village (from the Italian 'rustico'
meaning rural), which is 21 km from Rethymnon and 290 m above sea
level. It is set in pretty landscape and has the appearance of
a small town. At Livadi there is a double-aisled temple, from ca
1381, with well-preserved murals, a beautiful wood-carved templon
and an unusual belfry. To the southeast of the village there is
the famous Roustika Monastery, dedicated to Profitis (Prophet)
Ilias. It was built in 1637, according to the inscription on the
belfry, in the middle of a large garden. The monastery's temple
is a triple-aisled basilica with a cupola, decorated with impressive
murals. It has a wood-carved pulpit and a beautiful templon, both
made in 1844 by Aetos Katzourakis. Holy vessels, canonicals, and
relics of the Four Martyrs, Agia Marina, Agios Georgios and other
saints are kept in the monastery. There is also a library of historical
documents and manuscripts. |
