| On the road to Heraklion, 45 kilometres from Rethymnon, one of the villages of the Mylopotamos district is referred to with three different names! The village is Geni Gave or Drossia or Nea Axos. The truth is that its first name, Geni Gave, was the most representative with regards to its character, as it means new cafe. The settlement was, in fact, first established as a resting-place for travellers. The settlement is not very old; it was established when the Heraklion - Chania road was opened and took its first name. Over the years, it was renamed Nea Axes, but this new narne did not "hold", and today it is often referred to as Drossia(Coolness). This last name is also representative, as this is a mountain village, where the air is cool even in midsummer. You must also remember that this village has become very famous for its meat, and especially its very tasty pork, which you can enjoy sitting under the old sycamore trees whose rich foliage will rest and relax you. "Petoussis" taverna is one of the oldest and best in the area, and worth looking out for. |
