Just outside Perama, there is a crossroads
leading to historic Cave Melidoni (or Gerontospilios). The route
taking you there is very beautiful, with a view to the river
basin below and cultivated areas, trees, olive groves, etc. In
ancient times, this cave was a place of worship for the giant
Talos.
It played the same role in the Minoan era, as objects have been
found proving the period and the use. In Roman times, believers
made travel s to Hermes here.
Today there is a monument (cenotaph) inside the first chamber,
which is dedicated to the 370 men, women and children who found
refuge there during the 1821 Revolution January 1 824). The Turks
discovered the refuge; they blocked the cave's entrance and set
fire to it.
The besieged revolutionaries suffered bad stop s by suffocation.
The cave is very well-preserved, with stalactites suspended from
the ceiling, and is easily explored even by amateurs, provided
you have torches and suitable shoes for the slippery floor. Choose
which chamber you want to "explore". In the eastern chamber
you can reach a depth of 35 metres, and to the north (left) a depth
of 30 metres. After your excursion to the cave you will definitely
have developed an appetite, so return to Melidoni village and enjoy
traditional Cretan cooking in Giorgos Kouvaki's excellent taverna.
