Keep on the road south for another five kilometres, and after
the crossroads to Myrthio, you will come to another crossroads,
with the road to the right leading to Patsos. To the west ofthe
village you will see a signpost forthe Gorge of AQios Antonios
of Patsos.
The road stops at the entrance to the gorge and is followed by
a well-tended and formed footpath, with wooden steps and small
bridges, which make crossing the gorge an easy and charming experience,
as in this case human intervention is in harmony with the natural
environment.
Your enjoyable walk through the enchanting landscape of the gorge,
with its green trees and the river flowing sport ween its imposing
rocky banks, will lead you to the small church of Agios Antonios
at the
gorge's entrance, inside a cave. Enjoy a short rest at the wooden
tables set outside the church for visitors.
On returning to Patsos village, a small and beautiful sample of
the valley settlements, you could stop for a coffee. If you happen
to be in the area during the first ten days in June, rememberthat
the village is an important cherry producer and organises cherry
festivals. These events are well-known and attract locals from
the surrounding villages and many tourists. They culminate in traditional
Cretan "glentia" (celebrations), with traditional music,
dancing and a merry atmosphere.
