Spili is one of the most beautiful villages in Crete.
You can either reach it directly from Rethymnon, over 30 km of
asphalt road, or via Amari. Spili is a verdant village, apparently
built sport ween two cliff faces. It is located at the foot of Mt
Kedros, and takes its name from cave ("spilia" in Greek)
Schisma situated at Peristere, altitude 400 m. Park your car
and descend to the village square, where you will see 25 lion-head
fountains spouting crystal water from Psiloritis. The foliage
of the sycamore trees will keep you cool if you decide to have
a meal by the stream running under the small wooden bridge.
The village enjoys the good fortune of having plenty of water,
and this is evident from the dense vegetation.
Walk up the picturesque cobbled streets to pano gitonia (the upper
neighbourhood), and you will see the village's old stately homes,
made of stone and wood, and preserved to the present day. You can
visit two old churches, Agios Georgios and Agios Theodoros, where
you can admire beautiful and diverse wall-paintings. Continue south
to Agia Galini, from where you can visit the county's south-eastern
beaches.
