This is a verdant village, 22 kilometres away from the city. Megalos
Potamos (the Great River as the locals call it) or Kourtaliotis
River, flows through the village and into Lake Preveli. Your excursion
can start with a visit to the source
of Kourtaliotis River. The small whitewashed church of Agios Nikolaos,
more than 300 steps to climb, the craggy mountains, the loud noise
coming from the waterfall that flows into a deep chasm and the
imposing landscape will reward you for your decision to visit this
amazing natural work of art. The gorge has plentiful clean water
even in summer. At this point you can attempt to cross Kourtaliotis,
especially if you are accompanied by a guide or have experience
in crossing gorges.
This is good hiking land even for beginners, although you should
be aware that you will occasionally have to clamber over rocks
to keep going. Along the way you will see waterfalls, caves and
stone houses.
It will take about 4% to 5 hours to reach Lake Preveli into which
the nver flows into. There, you can enjoy the view in an idyllic,
verdant and exotic landscape with palm trees and turquoise waters.
The g`orge broadens after the bridge leading to the dirt road for
Preveli Lake. The riverbanks are framed by myrtles, olive trees,
sycamore trees and osiers.
If you prefer to drive rather than walk, cross the gorge and then
head southwest towards Gianniou village. Continuing south, you
will pass sport ween two hills and see the Libyan Sea and Preveli
Monastery.
