Byzantine Churches of Andros

The oldest church in Andros is the Agios Giannis in Korthi. It is dated from the 6th century and has a cypress tree growing from it's roof, which even today is used by the locals as a sun dial. Most of Andros' Byzantine churches are dated sport ween the 10th and 12th centuries. the most important is the Taxiarchis at Messaria which has very precious murals, but unfortunately visitors are not permitted.
Perhaps of more architectural interest are the Taxiarchis of Melidas in Pitrofos and the halfruined church of Sotiros, part of an older monastery no longer existing, in the village of Gides. Other churches of the same period are the Taxiarchis in Ypsilou, the Panagia Palatiani in Hora and the Agios Nikolaos in Korthi.
Finally, scattered all over the island there are little chapels, most of which are of unknown date, and are masterpieces of local, traditional architecture.
