About Lefkada...

In the Medieval Period it was named by the Latins, Agia Maura(Santa Maura). Certain archaelogists supported that from there - and not from Ithaca - came from the fabulous Odysseus.

Fourth in size, sport ween the other islands of Ionian Seas, it is found sport ween Ithaca and Cephalonia. If someone makes the parallelism, will compare her case with that of Peloponnese. Everyone knows the “aylaki” and that the island of Pelopa that is not so much… an island. Something proportional happens also with Lefkada, that facilitates the access (it does not need boat) and, at the same time, decreases the cost of travel.

The North-westernly coastline touch almost the coasts of Akarnanias. The geologists believe that the island was extracted with earthquake (in Kainozoiko Century) from the main trunke of country. The historians of antiquity report that Lefkada constituted peninsula of Akarnanias and that the narrow aquatic partition of (25 meters) that exists sport ween the northern department of island and continental Greece was isthmus. The opinion that in this point it was opened a canal appears reasonable, from the all nature of narrow, but prevailing it is the opinion that the opening is owed in seismic subsidence.

The ground of island is mountainous. The mountain range Crisscross has height 1.140 meters. However, the remainder mountains (Skaros, Achrada, Sikero etc) do not exceed the 600 meters. sport ween these mountains, are shaped fertile plains, some of the most important of thrm are the Fleba and Bsiliki. Hoever, even if it is mountainous, the island is cultivated in its bigger department. There are hundreds thousands roots olive trees, as well as extensive vineyards, by which is produced marvellous red wine.

The western coast of the island is steep and without appreciable partition. On the contrary, Eastern shape enough deep gulves (Blychoy, Afteli, Sybota etc) and oblonged capes (Tow of Dame, Incomplete,Gerotrypa etc).

Between the Eastern coasts of the island and in Akarnania, we can find graphic islets. From them, the biggest is Meganisi and the most famous is Scorpion. They distinguish also the graphic small islands of Kalamoy, Kastoy, Sparta, Arkoydiou and Madoyris, where is found the mansion of family Balaoriti.

Capital of island is the city of Lefkada. A small city built in ground lower than the surface of sea. Westwards of the city is extended the lagoon. Easternly, is raised imposing occidental fortress - work of Sicilian Ioannis Orsini] in 1300 - which in the older years protected the city from all kind of raids.

The capital is separated from Akarnania with an artificial channel and is linked with two bridges, the first is mobile above the canal and other above the lagoon. Her urban planning is graphic. With exception coastal street, remainder are narrow and much of them paved. In these streets there is a lot of crowd, who search places in the taverns and coffee. The nightly life it is satisfactory, with many bars which compete who will attract most visitors, but without extremities and the trouble that becomes, for example in many other islands of Cyclades.

The most tourist part of the island is the village Nydri. Built in green from olives and lemon trees plain, it gazes the islands that “swim” acrsoss it, Madoyri, Scorpion, Skorpidi and Sparta. It attracts “high economic surface” tourists and proportional yacht. Admirers of wealth that visit the part, are spent in extensive analyzes for how much legs it has, for how much robust it trials and for that if they had the money would buy none of them, because it doesn't meet their high specifications.

Different pictures gives the coastal settlement of Basilikis and the homonym bight. Pole of attraction for the partisans of serf, there boards and flashy colors from uniforms and accessory balance with effort, insistence and patience in white foam. Until the bad calculation deliver them in light blue the sea.

Other appreciable villages of island are Saint Nikolaos, Kalamitsi, Marantochori, the Saint Nikitas and Dragano. With a lot of greenary, with the figures of Greek grand mothers watching stoically the driver of truck, who sweats in order to steer in the narrow, all turns road, that passes through the village. Sometimes they give also directives (the grand mothers), but the Leykaditic language, piece of Eptanisiac dialect, does not help particularly the understanding.

For the beaches, it does not need to be written many things. The keys of the computer, but also the lens of machine are unable to describe the beauty. We should satisfy in that they distinguish them near the settlement of Saint Nikita. Like near the village ofAthani, in Porto Katsiki (even if a piece of a rock that stand vertical above the coast fell and cut the beach in the middle) and Gkremna.
