The main tourist season in Greece runs from about the beginning of April to the end of October, with the peak coming in July and August. For most British and American holiday-seekers the country is at its best from April to June and from September through October. Some of the islands, like Rhodes, Corfu and Crete attract tourists all year round; in these favored spots winter and summer run into each other, the daily average temperature through the year being about 71°F. Athens, in July and August can make sight-seeing hard work, but it is quite pleasant in winter.
For visiting the larger cities and exploring island regions, avoid July and August if at all possible. These are not only the hottest months, but also the most tourist-ridden and expensive. On the other hand, for sun worshippers the coast of Attica and the offshore islands are quite bearable-a northerly wind, the meltdmi, attenuates the midsummer heat. This is also the liveliest season, when Athenians flee their city and crowd such fashionable spots as Glyfadha, Mykonos, Hydra, etc. Therefore, if you intend to take your Greek vacation at the height of summer, plan well in advance to avoid disappointment. Count also on paying substantially higher prices during July and August.
