| Volos, chief city of this fertile province, is only just recovering
from a bad earthquake in 1955. Nearby, richly wooded Mt. Pelion
is easily accessible and shelters a score of picturesque villages
some of which have grown into summer resorts. There you can enjoy

very strong around Larissa and the excursion on to Tempe, a formidable
defile eight miles long, should not be missed. A unique experience
for seasoned mountaineers is the ascent of the Skolion, highest

to climbing up to one of the remaining hermitages of the Meteoron,
