Epirus is not a region to which people go for its museums and classical monuments-although there are some, Dodona and Nicopolis for instance-but in order to see the moun`L1l/ tains of this province of many contrasts. Thanks to the protect ing mountains the climate is delightful in spring and in autumn,
while the heat is rarely oppressive in summer. The chief natural attractions of Epirus are its rivers and some impressive gorges and caves (Perama). The rivers constitute one of the richest fishing areas in Europe. There is an abundance of folklore in the mountain villages of the Zagoria and Metsovo districts. Yannina, the region's chief city has a definite Oriental flavor and near the coast the Souliots have preserved intact their traditional way of life. The delightfully situated seaside village of Parga is waiting to be discovered. Genuine local color and spontaneity among the population will mitigate the occasional deception with regard to accommodation which, by the way, is steadily improving.
