A variety of steamers operated by a dozen shipping lines ply the Aegean, the Argo-Saronic and the Ionian waters,connecting Piraeus, the port of Athens, with the different islands and the coastal cities. Sea
There are more than 520 ports in Greece. There are many sea connections sport ween the mainland and the islands as well as sport ween islands. There are ships of many different types: Car ferries, catamarans, hydrofoils and high-speed ships. Certain types are for passengers only. The shipping companies announce their schedules a couple of months before operation begins. Schedule frequency is higher in summer.
The greatest and closest port to the Greek capital (Athens) is Piraeus. There are routes from Piraeus to most of the Aegean Sea islands (Cyclades, Dodekanissos, North Aegean, Argosaronicos Gulf, Crete, East Aegean) and to some Peloponnissos ports. Also there is a connection sport ween Piraeus and Thessaloniki (Macedonia).
Urban Transportation: There are several ways to reach this Port. The oldest metro line (line number one) ends at Piraeus. The metro station is opposite the Port. Also there are many bus routes from different points of Attica to Piraeus. The metro lines connect Piraeus port with the central railway station (Stathmos Larissis stop - metro line number two). There are two ways to go from Athens airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) to Piraeus by using urban transportation: Either by taking Bus number E94 to Ethniki Amina metro station and then using the metro system or by taking Bus number E96 directly to Piraeus. This bus is a 24h service (every 40 minutes from 24:00 until 04:30).
There are two more ports serving Attica: Rafina port and Lavrio port.
Those ports are connected with Athens by KTEL orange bus lines. Information: 210 8230179, 210 8213203 (to Lavrio) and 210 8210872 (to Rafina).
The main ports that connect the mainland with the Ionian Sea Islands are Patra, Igoumenitsa, Kylini and Gythio.
The main ports that connect themainland with Sporades islands are:Volos and Agios Konstantinos (Fthiotida).
The main ports that connect northern Greece with some Aegean islands are Kavala, Alexandroupoli and Thessaloniki.
